The Book of Madness and Cures

Regina O’Melveny’s brilliant debut celebrates 16th-century Venice as a young woman seeks her place in a changing world.

Gabriella Mondini proudly followed in the footsteps of her father, a renowned physician. But she has only now discovered just how precarious her position in an otherwise all-male profession is when suddenly, ten years after her father disappeared, she is denied permission to treat her patients, most of them female. When Gabriella receives a cryptic message from her long-missing parent, she sets out across Europe to discover where—and why—he has forsaken her.

The Book of Madness and Cures dazzles readers with Renaissance life as Gabriella attempts to unmask the mysteries of medicine…and the yearnings of her heart.

Interesting story
May 28, 2012

The story of a 16th century woman physician would have been a winner if not for the fakey stilted writing style which plagued the book. It must have been an attempt at "cerebral fiction", but trying to write in the vernacular of the times was not successful and made the book a stultifying slog. The subject of the book was very interesting, as were her travels, etc. but the awkward prose kept this from being a joy to read.
