Martha's American Food

Simple? Martha Stewart?! I had my doubts. I flipped through Martha’s American Food, nostalgia-tripping on Boston Baked Beans, Stuffed Pork Chops, and Crab Louis. Reading the “Back Story” for every recipe, I noticed the words “one of the simplest recipes in the world” (Buckeye Candies), “prepare your own without much effort” (Grilled Chicken with Spicy Peach Glaze) and “a distinctly American ease” (Tamale Pie). Since the Tex-Mex restaurant near me closed, I gave that Tamale Pie a try. The mix of ground turkey with serrano chile, bell pepper, tomato, green olives, cumin, oregano, and cayenne under a blanket of soft cornmeal and bubbly Monterey Jack cheese was distinctly delicious without breaking either the bank or my back.
Of course, Martha’s touch is in the details: quick-fried shallots add crunch to the all-natural Green Bean Casserole, fresh herbs pepper the Chicken Pot Pie’s pastry crust, and two pungent cheeses makes a grown-up Macaroni and Cheese. With its gorgeous photos and “Regional Flavor” sidebars on ingredients such as cranberries and pineapple, salmon and soft-shell crabs, Martha’s American Food is an all-you-can-eat buffet you’ll go back to for much more. Color photos.

Beautiful, But Boring
January 02, 2013

While this is a beautifully produced cookbook, as all of Martha Stewart's are, I found it particularly boring. It covers dishes that I already have in many, many other cookbooks, and while I expected that to some extent, I also assumed that Martha would put something special in these recipes. Unfortunately they are all seem to be standard renditions. On the other hand, you don't have many cookbooks I would recommend it.

This is a terrific basic cookbook I appreciate all the regional American recipes. The photographs are nice, and the recipes are well written. It's an all- around good book.

Highlights All-American fare
June 06, 2012

This is a good all-purpose cookbook. The photos and recipes highlight all-American fare, in all of its regional glory, and do so quite well. Given her attention to details, the recipes work on the first go-around. And given that the recipes are for fare one takes to a potluck or a barbeque, getting the book before the summer bounty of produce as well as parties was a good thing.
