The Prague Cemetery

From Umberto Eco, author of The Name of the Rose and Foucault’s Pendulum, comes The Prague Cemetery, the internationally bestselling novel that’s already hailed as a masterpiece.

19th century Europe is a place rife with intrigue. Jesuits plot against Freemasons. Italian republicans strangle priests with their own intestines. French criminals plan bombings by day and celebrate black masses at night. And dark conspiracies—like the cover-up in the Dreyfus Case and the forging of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion (the notorious text that later inspired Hitler)—abound. But what if all of this was masterminded by one lone man? Weaving real people and events into a tale of conspiracy on a grand scale, this is Eco at his most exciting.

Not for the light fiction reader
January 09, 2012

This is like reading the novelization of the movie Pulp Fiction. You are never quite sure where you are in the narrative. Part history, part stream of conscienciousness, part diary of a mad anti-Semitic murderer. Or is he? Over 430 pages to remind us that history is written by the victors and even that history is all made up of lies by bigots and madmen. I'm trying to figure out if conspiracy theorists will love or hate this book. It either proves everything they believe in is a big conspiracy & cover up or it proves that everything they believe is a conspiracy is all a big lie. What? Oh, my brain hurts.

Don't bother

Horrible book. Tries to combine history & a plot. Doesn't succeed. Don't bother. A waste of time & money.
