Alexander McCall Smith, author of the beloved No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, gives us a whole new world to visit with Corduroy Mansions, a captivating novel set in London’s vibrant Pimlico neighborhood that follows the comings and goings of a decidedly quirky cast of characters.
You’ll meet William, for instance, a wine merchant who’s having trouble convincing his 24-year-old son that it’s time to leave the nest. Downstairs, there’s Dee, an alternative health evangelist who can’t quite understand why her assistant isn’t keen on her giving him a colonic. On the other end of the spectrum, there’s Oedipus Snark, a Member of Parliament who’s so universally loathed that his own mother is writing a scathing tell-all book about him. And then there’s Freddie de la Haye—a former bomb-sniffing terrier who can fasten his own seat belt…and who is quite possibly the only avowed vegetarian canine in the city.
Tracing their adventures as they cope with relationships, meet life’s unexpected challenges and even stumble across a lost master painting, Corduroy Mansions is a reader’s delight—one that’s filled with all the charm, wit and humanity that we have come to expect from Alexander McCall Smith.

A hard read; characters not fully developed. Just when the story line starts to get to an interesting point the story ends.
No warning, no reason for the end, it just stops.
Once again the reviews did not measure up to the story line; who does these reviews? I am beginning to believe it is just a way to sell books.

An o.k. book, but certainly not, in my estimation, nearly up to the Ladies series. Of course, I was also disappointed in his other series. Maybe I just like Africa??

If you liked the Ladies Detective Agency series you should like Corduroy Mansions. Weird, quirky characters who make up the world around us live here. They make us smile, chuckle and cringe as in, "I couldn't manage that one as a neighbor!" They are the people of the world, like it or not. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea but maybe a bit of William's wine might help with an open mind.

The only thing interesting about this book is the name of the dog, Freddie de la Hay. What a disappointment. Much to do about nothing.

I hated for this story to end! Can't wait for the next one.
