A Christmas Blizzard

“A Prairie Home Companion” host and beloved author Garrison Keillor rings in the holiday season with a wry, witty novel about an unhappy traveler, an unplanned detour and a Christmas blizzard that changes everything.

A white Christmas? Humbug. What our hero really wants is to fly to Hawaii and weather the holiday season in the tropics. Alas, it’s not to be. Summoned to North Dakota to visit an ailing aunt, he arrives just in time to be trapped by a blizzard, without any electricity. And that’s when things take a turn. Visited by people from his childhood (as well as a quirky jumble of historical figures), he finds himself on a journey of rediscovery…and reaches, in a decidedly Keillor-esque way, an epiphany worthy of the season.

A Satire of America's Current State of Mind

I wasn't expecting the usual Garrison Keillor so I wasn't disappointed in this quick read. It is just a fable complete with wacky characters as our main man travels through rediscovery to revelation in a snowy and meandering journey into the human need for epiphany. Just sit back and enjoy encounters of the mystical kind.

Where is Garrison?
January 19, 2010

Although the book was a good read, it is hardly in the category of the Lake Woebegon books. Hearing the tales of the folks we have followed for 30 years from the person who used to do a morning show on the radio is like sitting by the fire with a good scotch; this was more like sitting in the outfield bleachers with a stale beer. I need to know about the folks at the Side Track Tap.

I hated it. I thought it was going to be a warm, sentimental homecoming book about good down to earth, hard working people. It was so far fetched with quirky characters and I couldn't tell what was real and what wasn't, it jumped around so much. I kept waiting for the happy feeling I wanted. Could hardly wait to put it down. then I was happy.

Classic Keillor

I loved this book! Keillor's quirky characters reminded me of people I knew growing up in a small midwestern town. He understands the nature of people, and states it in a way that is hilarious and poignant at the same time. This quick read was a great way to get into the Christmas spirit.
