“A Prairie Home Companion” host and beloved author Garrison Keillor rings in the holiday season with a wry, witty novel about an unhappy traveler, an unplanned detour and a Christmas blizzard that changes everything. A white Christmas? Humbug. What our hero really wants is to fly to Hawaii and weather the holiday season in the tropics. Alas, it’s not to be. Summoned to North Dakota to visit an ailing aunt, he arrives just in time to be trapped by a blizzard, without any electricity. And that’s when things take a turn. Visited by people from his childhood (as well as a quirky jumble of historical figures), he finds himself on a journey of rediscovery…and reaches, in a decidedly Keillor-esque way, an epiphany worthy of the season.

I like "A Prairie Home Companion" and Keillor's radio work, so I was really looking forward to this new Christmas tale. It's a slight book, and thank goodness for that. It's chock-full of quirky characters, strange happenings, and so on that have become Keillor's trademark. But the story rambles a bit and I didn't get the warm, fuzzy feeling I want to get from a seasonal story. This probably would've made a great short story; a more concise, tight tale would've been the ticket here. But as a novella, it just doesn't work well. The ending is over-the-top (I won't give it away) and, well, if you want a funny Christmas book, try Wally Lamb's Wishin' and Hopin'. It's laugh-out-loud hilarious, sweetly sentimental, and delightfully ornery. Everything I wish A Christmas Blizzard could've been. Sorry, Garrison!
