Author Letter
Dear SFBC member,

This is, hands down, the most challenging book I've ever worked on.  I'm a life-long fan of the series, having read Eye of The World way back in 1990 when it was first released in paperback.  These characters feel like old friends from my childhood, ones I've watched grow up as I did so.  But even still, with all that familiarity, this project has proven to be difficult like nothing I've ever done before.

The complexity of the side-plots, the wealth of worldbuilding, the weight of foreshadowing, the amazing depth of characterization...  It was like stepping up to direct a full orchestra in the middle of a movement, being handed the baton and told to keep them going without a break in the music.

My main goal has been to preserve the spirit and soul of this wonderful series, to make it as little about 'me' as possible and as much about Mr. Jordan's original vision.  There was a reverence to it that I can't quite describe.  This is the last legacy of one of my dearest heroes in life.  I think it turned out beautifully, but I suppose you--the readers--will have to be the final judge of that.

Vol. 6: Lord of Chaos

Jacket art by Darrell K. Sweet

Questions burned in his mind.

Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn, had found that it was one thing to know he was destined to face the Dark One in the Last Battle; it was another thing entirely to prepare for such a fate. He consulted scholars whenever possible, hoping their research might yield useful information about the prophecies and what the future held. But most of them simply spouted words that told him nothing, or worse, became obsequious, trying to find out what he wanted to hear so they could echo it.

The nobility were worse with their tangled loyalties and suspicions, outwardly eager to serve and advise him...desperately hiding their fear.

Fear had become one of Rand's most reliable weapons. Normally unflappable Aes Sedai-women trained to channel the One Power-feared the madness that invariably claimed men who channeled. And in truth, no one was certain of Rand's strength or his sanity.

His friends Mat and Perrin commanded armies in his name-a force to give most enemies pause. Rand himself was gathering yet another army to pit against Shadowspawn-an army of men who could channel. Aes Sedai support would be welcome, but they'd promised nothing, and though Rand believed that the three he knew best-Egwene, Nynaeve and Elayne-would help him all they could, he did not trust their Sisters.

Sometimes, hearing the voice of long-dead Lews Therin Telamon, the Dragon, in his head, he wondered if he could trust himself.

In the end, perhaps, it wouldn't matter. The Wheel of Time was turning, the Pattern was being shaped, and he would complete the weave...one way or another.

Slow start
January 19, 2010

This book was a little harder to "get into" than the first 5. Part of this may come from the large collection of "side Issues" detailed in this volume. No overriding focal point.

Must read :)

I have heard that there is a slowing down in Mr. Jordan's books, not so with this one. This is some plodding with the story line...but its worth going through it :)

Rewarding

This book is slow in the beginning -- laying the framework, but by the end you'll be tearing through the pages. I've read this book twice. I'd highly recommend reading the WOT series.

Jordan must get paid by the word!
November 17, 2005

His first 3 books in the Wheel of Time were great. He seems to have lost his direction. So many words, so little content. Wandering, wandering, wandering. Much better authors out there: George Martin, Terry Goodkind, R A Salvatore. Skip Jordan.

This book started out to be very very boring and tedious. However, the end had my adrenaline pumping so much I couldn't stand it. If you can get through the first half of the book I think you'll be rewarded.
