Gil Hodges

The son of an Indiana coal miner, Gil Hodges grew up playing baseball to forget the woes of the Great Depression—and turned his love for the game into an unforgettable career. As the Brooklyn Dodgers’ first baseman, Hodges helped lead the team to six National League pennants and a World Series victory in 1955. Dutifully following the Dodgers to Los Angeles in 1958, Hodges longed to return to New York. He joined the original Mets team in 1962, finishing his career playing with the team, and taking over the manager’s spot on their bench. Under his steady hand, the team went from league underdogs to the World Champion “Miracle Mets” in 1969.

Acclaimed authors Tom Clavin and Danny Peary tell Hodges’ incredible life story as never before, vividly tracing his baseball career with rare insight from family and friends, and also delving into his unsung tour of duty as a U.S. Marine who was scarred by combat on Tinian and Okinawa. Even those close to him later in life knew little about his brave service in World War II.

Gil Hodges is a thrilling biography that paints a portrait of an amazing era of baseball as much as it does one of the game’s most admirable and unsung players.
