The late Randy Pausch, a professor of computer science and human-computer interaction at Carnegie Mellon University, made the world stop and pay attention when, in defiance of his pancreatic cancer, he delivered his “Last Lecture” titled “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.” It became an Internet sensation viewed by millions, and Pausch went on to flesh out the ideas outlined in his talk, writing The Last Lecture, which went on to be a #1 New York Times bestseller. On October 6, 2007, he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers for the day during their practice after they learned that one of the childhood dreams mentioned in his speech was to play in the NFL. He was also offered a minor role in the Star Trek movie when the director learned he was a devoted Star Trek fan. He died on July 25, 2008.
